Yankees Place Masahiro Tanaka on the Disabled List

Masahiro Tanaka's uneven 2017 season took another downturn on Saturday when the Yankees placed him on the 10-day disabled list with inflammation of the right shoulder.

Righty reliever Giovanny Gallegos has been recalled in the interim from Scranton.

"I don't think this will be too long", manager Joe Girardi said. Unfortunately, he joins C.C. Sabathia as recent additions to the Yankees' DL.

Girardi said there is nothing structurally wrong with Tanaka. Tanaka walked a career-high five batters in just four-plus innings on Wednesday night, an 11-5 Yankees win over the Blue Jays in Toronto.

"We decided he needs a break", Girardi said. "I've had a tough time getting the soreness out of the area".

Tanaka has struggled all season, having gone 8-10 with a 4.92 ERA.

NY does have depth in their rotation after adding Sonny Gray and Jamie Garcia at the trade deadline, but had sent Montgomery to the minors in an effort to limit his innings.

The Yankees starting rotation has suddenly become a MASH unit.

Girardi said the right-handers Luis Cessa and Bryan Mitchell were the leading candidates to start Monday's game against the Mets, which Tanaka had been scheduled to pitch.
