Trump, Macron to work together on N. Korea

French President Emmanuel Macron on Saturday warned against an "escalation of tensions" over North Korea amid a growing war of words between Washington and Pyongyang.

"They discussed the need to confront the increasingly risky situation associated with North Korea's destabilizing and escalatory behavior", the White House said in a statement.

"President Trump reiterated to President Macron the United States' commitment to stop the North Korean nuclear menace".

It said the United States was ready "along with its allies, to apply the full range of diplomatic, economic and military measures" to end any nuclear threat from the North.

"Trump and Macron pledged to work together with allies and partners to enforce United Nations sanctions and achieve denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula", the White House said.

In a statement Saturday, Macron said the situation "undermines the preservation of worldwide peace" and the North Korean regime "poses a serious threat to the security of its neighbors".

The Chinese foreign ministry said Xi urged Trump to avoid "words and deeds" that would "exacerbate" the already-tense situation, exercise restraint and seek a political settlement.

Trump's warning came after the North threatened to fire ballistic missiles over Japan towards the US Pacific island of Guam.

"Trump looks forward to seeing Xi in China later this year, a meeting that will be a very historic event".
