Patrick Mahomes eclipses Tyler Bray on Chiefs depth chart

"It gives Patrick an opportunity to step up and work with that second group and see what he can do there", head coach Andy Reid said.

Mahomes was very solid in the Chiefs' preseason game against the San Francisco 49ers on Friday night, going 7-of-9 and throwing for 49 yards and a touchdown while registering a passer rating of 126.4. That came after Bray himself failed to do anything of substance in limited action. At the very least, he's getting run with the squads second team in practice on Sunday.

Reid said he made the decision to elavate Mahomes, the No. 10 overall pick in this year's draft, based on the progress he's made running the offense in several areas the last several months.

Smith certainly remains the starter in Kansas City, but Mahomes' performance thus far this summer in camp and the preseason lends credence to the idea that he will take over as the team's starter in the not-so-distant future. But Patrick has also done a nice job.

"He had to do well so he could get in there to function and be able to go", Reid said. Finally, his coaches in Kansas City are starting to see it. The first-team offense marched down the field in an eight-play, 75-yard drive covering just 3 minutes and 22 seconds.

Tight end Travis Kelce said he sees the potential in Mahomes. The starting job belongs to Alex Smith beyond a shadow of a doubt.

"It's a fun thing to have Alex and his confidence and him being just about the oldest guy in the room", Kelce said. "But leading us and knowing his veteran presence has got some accountability to it".

Reid did mention the switch is only for practice right now and has yet to make a decision concerning the next preseason game. The rookie may play a series with the first-team depending on how quickly Smith exits the game.

"If you're going to try and put it in a box, I'm not sure we can do that", Reid said.

Reid did not commit to whether the Mahomes' promotion to the No. 2 quarterback role was a planned move, or even a permanent one for that matter.

Notes: Tight end Travis Kelce returned to the practice field for the first time since August 3. Nelson played 18 snaps in Friday's preseason game against San Francisco.
