Nationals get 'a glimmer of hope' on Bryce Harper

The 28-year-old Virginia native had a tiebreaking single in the seventh inning on Wednesday, leading San Francisco to its fourth win in five outings with a 3-1 victory over the Chicago Cubs. The play was not pretty. The base may have been slippery following a three-hour rain delay. They are bound to be upset and anxious now.

Harper, 24, left Saturday's game with a.326/.419/.614 batting line, 29 home runs and a 1.034 OPS through 472 PA in 2017. The All-Star has been sidelined since leaving his July 23 start at Arizona after two innings.

Manager Dusty Baker spoke this week about the importance of new players fitting well into the Washington Nationals' clubhouse in the middle of the season.

And it would mean that Major League Baseball's greatest stage would be deprived one of its most talented and recognizable players - one of few legitimate and marketable stars who resonate beyond casual fans of the game. Plus, the Nats have a huge lead in the NL East and for the number two seed in the playoffs, if the season ended today.

It's tough for both teams and both teams played a good game.

Washington Nationals' Brian Goodwin, right, steals second against San Francisco Giants second baseman Joe Panik, left, during the eighth inning of the first baseball game of a split doubleheader, Sunday, Aug. 13, 2017, in Washington. Baker said Bochy was the first one to call him when he was sacked by Cincinnati, and Baker called in April when Bochy had a heart procedure. "I hope he's alright", Jones said.

Along with being rivals, Baker and Bochy are friends.

Chris Stratton had to wait 42 extra hours to make his start at Nationals Park. That game started after 10 p.m., with a sparse crowd in attendance, a repeat that was spared Friday night. And they won't have a rested starter to take the ball on Wednesday.

"When talking about building an organization, you'd be short-sighted you'd be short-sighted to think about the 25 men on the major league roster", Rizzo said. They could use Matt Cain or Albert Suarez to run the first leg of a bullpen game.
