Escaped Winfield inmate captured in Butler County

Authorities in Cowley County, KS, are searching for a man who escaped from a correctional facility on Tuesday night.

A deputy spotted 53-year-old Lewis Mitchell just before 11 a.m. on the north side of Douglass. He said Mitchell was seen carrying a pipe earlier in the day, but he did not have it when deputies found him, and he was taken into custody without a struggle.

Mitchell was described as a black man standing 6-1 and weighing 210 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes.

Kansas Department of Corrections records state he was serving time for burglary and has prior convictions of burglary, theft and aggravated indecent liberties with a child.

The search intensified Wednesday morning when a deputy in Douglass saw a man hitch-hiking.

Andover and Augusta officers, the U.S. Marshals, Kansas Highway Patrol, Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office, and a helicopter were brought in to try to track Mitchell. He might also be wearing a red hoodie.
