Vote for ideology that binds India: Meira Kumar to lawmakers

MIM will also back Opposition's Gopalakrishna Gandhi for the Vice President.

The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) is still undecided on supporting Congress' joint opposition candidate Meira Kumar in the Presidential poll, scheduled for 17 July.

The interactive session, the sources say, will see Meira Kumar, the Opposition's presidential nominee, and Gandhi, its vice-presidential candidate, make their presentations before them. The All India Congress Committee (AICC) has directed the local unit to maintain party affiliations and sent AICC observer Siddharth Patel to negotiate between the MLAs and PCC members here. An MIM legislator, who preferred anonymity, told this newspaper that the party had supported neither A.P.J. "Today, the collegium will take a decision and you all know I am a candidate in this contest to fight the battle of ideology", Kumar said. In 2007, the MIM had not supported UPA candidate Pratibha Patil over issues with her remarks against Muslim women. While Ram Nath Kovind is nearly assured of a win, Opposition candidate Meira Kumar may suffer from cross-voting in these two states. This also reflects the failure on the part of the Congress leadership in reaching out to the MIM.

"Some disgruntled members from NDA may vote for Meira Kumar. All will vote for Meira Kumar", said a senior MIM leader speaking to Express here on Saturday evening.

Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh had invited all Congress MLAs for a breakfast meet to ensure that everyone remains on the same page regarding presidential election.
