Shikhar Dhawan to replace injured Murali Vijay for Sri Lanka Test tour

He last played a Test match for India in 2016 against New Zealand.

Indian left-hander Shikhar Dhawan, who has been on a run-scoring spree in limited-overs cricket since his comeback into the Indian team, has replaced injured opening batsman Murali Vijay for India's tour to Sri Lanka.

"Vijay, who had suffered a wrist injury during Australia's tour of India, has complained of pain in his right wrist, while playing a preparatory match", the Indian cricket board (BCCI) said in a statement on Monday.

Dhawan did show form in the lone T20I that India played against West Indies, but the opener failed to convert his 12 ball 23 into a big score. "The BCCI medical team has therefore advised that Vijay should continue his rehabilitation program", he added.

Dhawan had suffered a thumb injury in October and was ruled out of third and final Test against New Zealand.

India play Sri Lanka in a three-match Test series with the first Test to be played on July 26 at the Galle International Stadium, followed by the remaining Tests at Colombo and Kandy respectively in August.

Recently, Dhawan has been in superb form, ending the ICC Champions Trophy in England as the leading run-scorer. The will be India's first full series in eight years in Sri Lanka, involving all three formats of the game. However, India managed to win the four-Test series 2-1 to end the home season unbeaten.
