London's Gatwick airport runway briefly closed after Air Canada plane's tyre burst

A Toronto-bound flight was forced to return to London's Gatwick Airport Monday after a tire blew during takeoff.

Flights are now using Gatwick's back-up runway and the airport has warned of delays and some cancellations.

Airline passengers are facing cancellations, delays and disruption after a plane tyre burst as it left the runway on a transatlantic flight. "Passengers are advised to speak to their airline for the latest flight information".

The Boeing 767 plane reportedly hit debris on the runway and still managed to take off, but had to dump fuel and head back towards the airport for an emergency landing.

All inbound and outbound flights have since been halted for more than an hour with inspectons still taking place on the runway.

The runway is now being inspected to make sure any debris is cleared.

A runway inspection was ordered after a Air Canada flight was forced to return to the airport following the incident.

"Following this Gatwick's runway has been closed since 2.12pm to allow for a runway inspection".

"We apologise as some flights will be delayed as a result and a few arriving flights are likely to be diverted to other airports".
