Large piece of scrap metal crushes van in Florida, driver survives

Florida Highway Patrol says a semi-truck hauling scrap metal was traveling westbound on SR 528 exit ramp to westbound I-4.

An Orlando man sustained only minor injuries when a large piece of scrap metal crushed his van after falling from a highway overpass Saturday morning, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Troopers say the ramp from westbound State Road 528 to westbound I-4 will be closed for several hours as the debris is cleared from the road. A large metal pipe flew off Wharton's truck, tumbled off the overpass and landed on the roof of Escobar's Pontiac van, according to WFTV.

He was ticketed for careless driving.

The scrap metal smashed in the roof of 36-year-old Jesus Armando Escobar's auto on the driver's side. But the driver, 36-year-old Jesus Armando Escobar of Orlando, miraculously survived and suffered only minor injuries.
