Hawks investigating shooting of former ANCYL leader

Former ANC Youth League secretary general Sindiso Magaqa, Ward 11 councillor Nonsikelelo Mafa and Ward 16 councillor Jabu Mzizi are now "in a critical but stable condition" after they were shot and injured on Thursday night while returning from an ANC meeting.

Police have urged anyone with information regarding the shooting incident involving ward councillors in Umzimkhulu Municipality in southern KwaZulu-Natal to come forward.

Three councillors were attacked and shot in Ibisi on Thursday evening.

The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation's (known as the Hawks) spokesperson, Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi, said on Friday that a request had been made for security at the hospital and police had been deployed.

"Three people were ambushed and two are still in hospital".

"The victims sustained serious injuries after the suspects unleashed a hail of bullets at their vehicle".

The African National Congress (ANC) in KwaZulu-Natal says the manner in which its councillors are targeted raises suspicion that there's an orchestrated plan to eliminate their public representatives. "We are not going to allow the dark forces and assassins roaming the streets of uMzimkhulu to destabilise this district".

"In the space of four months, two now serving councillors and a former councillor have been brutally murdered in this municipality".

He said government had observed with concern that the modus operandi used in the Umzimkhulu killings was similar.

Several interventions had been put in place, with immediate effect, to curb the spate of killings in the region, he said. However, a police task team is investigating.
