Double portrait release marks Camilla's 70th birthday

Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall turns 70 on Monday - and she is being celebrated with an official new portrait.

Indeed some fans, such as her biographer Penny Junor, have suggested that far from being one of the biggest dangers to the House of Windsor and the monarchy in general, warm, earthy and intelligent Camilla is now one of its biggest assets.

Milestone: Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall photographed at their official London residence, Clarence House, earlier this year.

The royal couple seem very content, both in public and private, and it's clear that Camilla has made Charles very happy.

Clarence House has also released a new portrait of Charles and Camilla, captured by famed photographer Mario Testino, to mark her birthday. The Duchess can be seen wearing a smart navy coat by one of her favourite designers, Fiona Clare, which she accessorised with a pearl necklace and earrings. Pictured front row (l-r), Prince William, Prince George, the Duchess of Cambridge, Princess Charlotte, and the Queen.

On Thursday, she had enjoyed a garden party at Clarence House, where she wore a simple light-blue dress with an embellished bodice.

He added: "I'm honoured to document their royal highnesses the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall on this very important date". He described the duchess, whose birthday is today, as a "beautiful person".

TV presenter Paul O'Grady has praised his friend Camilla for embracing her position as a member of the royal family late in life.

Royal Central will be providing special coverage of the Duchess of Cornwall's birthday throughout the day.

Family and close friends were invited to the event on his Highgrove estate in Gloucestershire last night ahead of Camilla's actual birthday on Monday.

Valentine is widely credited as the person who has helped Camilla to find her own sense of modern, personal style since she married Prince Charles in 2005.
