Trump Says 'Let's Play Ball' At Record Turnout For Congressional Baseball Game

Rep. Steve Scalise remains in critical condition at a Washington, DC-area hospital following a shooting on Wednesday.

Scalise and three others were shot by 66-year-old James Hodgkinson during a GOP baseball practice on Wednesday. The bullet that struck Scalise tore through his pelvis, fracturing bones, injuring internal organs and causing severe bleeding, the hospital said.

Dr. Jack Sava, director of trauma at MedStar Washington Hospital Center, said the team working with Scalise is "encouraged" by his progress.

Three days after he was shot in the hip by a high-velocity rifle, U.S. Rep. Steve Scalise has regained consciousness and is able to talk softly, having spoken with his wife Saturday morning, according to two sources close to the congressman's family. His doctors cautioned, however, that he remained in critical condition and would "be in the hospital for some time".

Sava said Friday that there are hundreds of bullet fragments in Scalise's body, but "we have no intention to try and remove all the bullet fragments at this point".

"The Scalise family greatly appreciates the outpouring of thoughts and prayers", the statement concludes.

Congressional Democrats beat their Republican counterparts in Washington's annual charity baseball game, an event marked by the shooting of Rep. "It's been - he's in some trouble, but he's a great fighter and he's going to be okay, we hope", said President Donald Trump at a Thursday news conference. The announcer's mention of Scalise, the House majority whip who was critically wounded in the attack Wednesday, brought the masses to their feet. The person did not disclose the names, but said those listed had been briefed.

I would also like to personally thank all of the first responders who bravely assisted at the scene, as well as the entire staff of MedStar Washington Hospital Center for their continued excellent care. Numerous players on both teams wore LSU caps in Scalise's honor. The shooter was an IL man, James Hodgkinson, who had lashed out against President Donald Trump and Republicans over social media.

Supporters of House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, R-La., hold signs before the Congressional baseball game, Thursday, June 15, 2017, in Washington. Hodgkinson was shot by police and later died of his injuries. Scalise was on the second base when he was injured by a crazed gunman who was trying to kill Republicans Wednesday.

A huge ovation came from the crowd, which swelled to a record 24,959, when Special Agent David Bailey, one of the Capitol Police officers injured in the attack on Republicans at their ball practice in Virginia, threw out the first pitch.
