Steve Scalise was upgraded from "critical" to "serious condition" Saturday and continued to show signs of improvement after he was wounded in a shooting at a Republican baseball practice outside Washington.

Dr. Jack Sava of MedStar Washington Hospital Center says "an excellent recovery is a good possibility", but says Scalise faces additional surgeries, a long hospital stay and rehabilitation.

Since then he has had more than one surgery and doctors expect he will continue to have more in the near future.

Scalise, the third ranking member of House Republican leadership, was among six people who were injured after a gunman opened fire Wednesday in Alexandria, Virginia, during a Republicans' early-morning practice ahead of a charity baseball game.

Sava said Friday that there are hundreds of bullet fragments in Scalise's body.

The shooter was killed by police officers whose work won praise from Trump in his remarks.

Mika's family thanked the care team at George Washington University Hospital for their "world-class care" and said they are "grateful beyond words for the heroic actions" of the two officers that ended the bloodshed Wednesday.

At the moment, "there is more risk involved in removing them", said Sava. He received multiple units of blood, said Sava, who declined to describe the exact nature of Scalise's internal injuries.

Still, finger-pointing lingered as some on each side suggested the other had contributed more to the disparaging broadsides they've increasingly aimed at each other. "The Scalise family greatly appreciates the outpouring of thoughts and prayers".

Gunman James Hodgkinson, from Belleville, Illinois, a home inspector, died after officers in Mr Scalise's security detail fired back at him.

"We've had a very, very divided country for many years", Trump said.

"By playing tonight we are showing the world that we will not be intimidated by threats, acts of violence or assaults on our democracy", said US President Donald Trump, appearing on the park's giant screen but not attending. Griner remains hospitalized at MedStar Hospital after getting shot in the ankle, and Sava described her in good condition.

Former New York Yankees manager Joe Torre presented the game ball to Capitol Police special agent David Bailey, who came out on the field on crutches after being injured in Wednesday's shooting, to throw out the first pitch to huge applause.

The Louisiana Republican was shot in the hip Wednesday morning in the baseball practice shooting by an IL man with grudges against President Donald Trump and the GOP.
