Athens-area authorities relieved after Georgia escapees' capture

Deputies soon spotted the auto and began a 20-mile high-speed chase down Interstate 24, south-east of Nashville, Tennessee highway patrol spokesman Lt Bill Miller said.

"Maybe a lot of people are getting a reward out of this", Tennessee Bureau of Investigation Director Mark Gwyn told reporters.

The two were being held at the Rutherford County jail.

- The two Georgia inmates who were captured Thursday night are making their first court appearance Friday afternoon.

The two were considered to be friends in prison and shared a cell together. It was just a few hours after being apprehended on Pruitt Road, near I-24.

Authorities put up roadblocks, but the following day they discovered that the pair had allegedly stolen a white Ford F250 pickup from an industrial site nine miles from the burglary.

Two escaped inmates sought in the killings of two guards on a Georgia prison bus were captured Thursday in Tennessee after holding an elderly couple captive and leading police on a chase by vehicle and foot, authorities said.

A nationwide manhunt had intensified for the inmates - Donnie Russell Rowe and Ricky Dubose - who had been armed and on the run since Tuesday, officials said. At left is Tennessee Highway Patrol Lt. Bill Miller, and at right is Rutherford County Sheriff Mike Fitzhugh. The sheriff said that a work crew saw them, too.

The men initially wanted to make the elderly woman drive as their hostage, but when her vehicle failed to start they stole the couple's Jeep instead.

Rowe and Dubose shared a cell in prison, but authorities had said they couldn't be certain if that is where they hatched their escape plan. The ensuing foot chase shut down Interstate 24, about 10 miles south of Murfreesboro. Along with the high speeds, two Sheriff's Office's vehicles were shot at by the suspects.

The escapees stayed inside the Shelbyville home for nearly three hours before fleeing.

The focus of the manhunt for Donnie Rowe and Ricky Dubose suddenly shifted north of the Georgia line Thursday evening after the fugitives invaded a home in Shelbyville and held a couple hostage for several hours. Rowe is from nearby Lewisburg, TN.

The capture was a relief to Putnam County Sheriff Howard Sills, who said the county's work isn't done.

Georgia's Sheriff Sills commented, "This was a brutal double murder of two correctional officers that occurred in my county". "So I'm totally grateful to everyone involved".

"Earlier tonight, with the assistance of our law enforcement partners in Tennessee, unsafe fugitives were captured and taken into custody", Deal said in the press release.

There were multiple agencies involved in the pursuit and almost 40 officers.

LeValley stresses that the reward is for information leading to an arrest. Having lost their weapons in the crash, Dubose and Rowe surrendered, authorities said.

Authorities are crediting a homeowner and a neighbor with helping end the days-long escape of two inmates accused of killing two corrections officers.

Authorities then chased the fugitives until they crashed their vehicle, Emmett said.

". They took my auto". Rowe had been serving a life sentence without parole for armed robbery, possession of a firearm during a crime, and aggravated assault.
