Vice Mayor John Kennedy Issues Cinco de Mayo Message

In Philadelphia, a Cinco de Mayo-related celebration was scrapped after organizers determined turnout would drop over concerns about immigration raids.

This year Newport is hosting some fun ways for everyone to enjoy Cinco de Mayo, with attractive waterfront venues, high-quality restaurants, outdoor celebrations, and unique experiences! Is it celebrated in Mexico at all or is it just a USA holiday? For those out of the loop, here's a refresher on what Cinco de Mayo is all about.

No, it's not Mexican Independence Day, so don't be one of those people who gets confused.

Friday marks the 155th anniversary of the holiday synonymous with margaritas, cervezas (beer) and Mexican food. The victory occurred at the Battle of Puebla between 6,000 French troops and small, under-supplied Mexican force of 2,000 men. And it's not about Mexico's independence like many people think.

At the reception on Thursday, Pence also praised the contributions Mexican-Americans have made to the country.

That holiday is celebrated on September 16th. It's been big in the United States since Mexican Americans raised awareness for it in the 1960s. In large part, those early holidays in the U.S. were a forum to celebrate the fact that a group of ragtag indigenous people were able to successfully hold back French forces.

Americans consume 81 million pounds of Avocados on Cinco de Mayo every single year, according to the California Avocado Commission.

"So this holiday is an opportunity to remember how deeply Mexican-American culture is woven into the fabric of this country", Obama stated during the 2015 celebration. "I love Hispanics!" Trump wrote in a tweet.
