Resurgent Quiros birdies last 4 holes to take lead in Sicily

Alvaro Quiros birdied his final four holes to move into the lead at the halfway stage of the Rocco Forte Open on Friday and round off a stunning return to form.

Hoey, who lost his full European Tour card previous year, recorded six birdies and three bogeys in his second round.

Northern Ireland's Michael Hoey now leads the tournament on 13-under, a shot clear of England's David Horsey, South African Zander Lombard and Sweden's Sebastian Soderberg.

The Spaniard wasn't able to replicate his ace from the opening day at the 13th as he made par, but moved into a share of the lead by following a gain at the 15th by holing a 20-footer at the next. He then reeled off five birdies on the back nine to come home in 30 shots.

"It's a very nice situation for me, it's a long time since I've had the opportunity", Quiros said.

"(Starting with) eight consecutive pars was a typical situation for me to blow my mind because I'm not shooting low, and today was a big step forward".

Belfast's Michael Hoey is right in the mix after two rounds of the European Tour's Rocco Forte Open in Sicily after backing up his fantastic 10-under-par first round with another solid second.

"Sometimes I've been very greedy trying to force myself into a better score when the game wasn't good and today I have to be proud of myself".

Northern Irishman Hoey, a five-time European Tour victor, birdied his opener on the 11th and added further gains on the 13th, 15th, 16th, 17th, first, second and third.

Ormsby, who has been a professional for 16 years after a collegiate career in Houston, bookended his round today with bogeys but in between there were eight birdies, further indication that is game is back on track.

A win in Sicily, however, would mark a remarkable return to the European Tour and he is in pole position after following his opening 63, which included a hole-in-one, with a seven under 64 at Verdura Golf Club on the southern coast of the Italian island.
