Seagate and Amazon team up on cloud/hard-drive combo

So, in order to entice a purchase it's all about the extras, and Seagate came up with a great one for its latest hard drive: free backups.

The company has recently taken the wraps off the Seagate Duet, a new portable hard drive that can sync with Amazon Drive. It's a standard 1TB mechanical hard drive with a USB 3.0 connection. There is also the option to backup files from smartphones and tablets using the Amazon Drive mobile app. "Photos and videos on a mobile device constitute some of the most precious moments a person may have".

"With the Amazon Drive mobile app, people can easily back up files from their smartphone or tablet to the cloud", Seagate said in a release.

Seagate Duet gives buyers a free year of Amazon Drive Unlimited Storage for backing up their data to the cloud. All you need to do is plug the hard drive into your Mac (or PC) and sign into Amazon's service.

As The Verge points out, there are a few caveats to this offer. "With the Seagate Duet drive, they can view and back up their favorite memories and files stored on their computer as well as on their smartphone or tablet using the Amazon Drive mobile app".

This is versus you having to manually update both your hard drive and cloud storage. Amazon's listing for the Duet (the only way to buy it right now) confirms as much, but there's some fine print.

The "extremely user-friendly" 1TB storage drive is a black, slim, lightweight device and offers fast local transfer speeds and offline access, Seagate says.
