1 student dead, 11 hurt in school van crash near Trinity

DPS has confirmed she was the daughter of a Trinity County Sheriff's Deputy.

A seven-year-old Trinity girl, who was on the van at the time of crash, received substantial injuries and was taken to East Texas Medical Center (ETMC) in Trinity, where she died. Three have been treated and released. Three passengers in the truck were transported to ETMC in Trinity, two by ambulance and one by private vehicle.

TxDOT spokeswoman Rhonda Oaks said FM 1893 will be closed for a couple hours.

Investigators said all of the children were wearing seat belts when the crash happened.

In addition to determining causative factors in the crash, Texas DPS troopers are examining all relevant evidence to ensure state law was followed.

"The best as we can tell, the sun is going to play a big, major role in this", Trinity County Sheriff Woody Wallace said.

"It's gonna affect everyone", Huffman said. "All of the students, staff and their families involved in this incident are in the thoughts and prayers of the Trinity ISD family".

A message left with the Trinity Independent School District was not immediately returned Thursday.

In this case, Trinity ISD officials had an occasion where they had to split the route up, Kaufman said.

According to the district superintendent, the district is authorized to use vans to transport small groups of students.
